People, animals, objects – everything has a voice in animation, and every one of them needs to feel real. My background as a trained stage and screen actor means I don’t just do voices, I build characters: their history, their wants, their flaws, then let that drive the performance.
It’s the reason my animation work has picked up award recognition, and the reason directors bring me back for the trickiest, most emotionally demanding character briefs.
The incredible true story of this iconic Syrian brown bear is close to my heart – I played Wojtek in Theatre Objektiv’s acclaimed stage production ‘Wojtek the Bear’, which ran for three years and over 80 performances, including two Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs, a Scottish tour, and two runs in Warsaw, Poland. This was a 2-hander play, and Wojtek was given a voice.
In the film, I play the leading role of Chairman.
This is no children’s story of Baloo or Yogi, but a story for everyone. The film picked up various awards in the UK and internationally, was shortlisted for an Academy Award nomination, and received an Annie Award nomination.
